In 1999 Helmut Newton and his friend, the collector Gert Elfering, assembled a one-off album of his photographs. Newton, a German-Australian fashion photographer drawn to Expressionist cinema, film noir and surrealism, helped shape modern photography and visual art, and the album gives a close view of his working process.
This book reproduces the album in full and at its original size: more than 100 photographs, comprising 8 Polaroids, 16 chromogenic prints and 79 gelatin silver prints, each with Newton's handwritten pencil annotation. Many of the images were previously unseen. A foreword by Philippe Garner, an interview between Matthias Harder and Gert Elfering and a statement by the collector Nicola Erni, in whose collection the album is held, complete the 144-page hardback.
