Living in the Forest

Living in the Forest surveys 50 contemporary houses built among trees, in settings that range from jungle to snowy evergreen woods and the banks of Nordic fjords. Each architect-designed home addresses woodland living in its own way, some through ecological design, others through shelter against the elements, and together they make a case for building in close contact with nature.

Compiled by the Phaidon Editors, the 256-page hardback pairs exterior and interior photography with a short text on each house. Projects come from Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Thailand, the UK and the USA, by practices such as Helen & Hard, HW Studio, Olson Kundig, Studio MK27 and Studio Saxe, together with younger studios focused on environmental design. Among them are a treehouse set high above the ground and a hideaway that leaves no footprint.
